FAQs

Will my partner/ support person(s) benefit from this class?

Absolutely! Sometimes we think these classes are more for them. Their roles are clearly defined and championed in each class. By the end of this series, they will have a good understanding of how they can support the mom during labour and postpartum, care for their infant, what they contribute to the breastfeeding relationship and how to reach out for support for themselves.

Do I have to take notes?

Not unless you want to. Printable handouts and useful links will be emailed to you at the end of the classes.

When is the best time to take this class?

Ideally in your last trimester between 30-36 weeks pregnant.

Do I need this course when I am having a planned cesarian section or know I am getting an epidural?

Yes! Studies have proven that women who take part in prenatal childbirth education, regardless of how their infant is delivered have less stress and anxiety leading up to “the big day”. Because they understand what is happening within their body, the words used by their health care team and know what to expect at each stage, from walking through the hospital doors to leaving with their baby- they manage the challenges of their delivery, require less medical interventions, recover faster postpartum and adapt to life in their new roles easier. Their partners experience less stress and anxiety as they understand what to expect as well. There may be some course content that will not apply to you specifically in case of a planned cesarian section but much of the childbirth portion of the class is focused on how to support the mother and the partner’s role and that applies regardless of vaginal or cesarian delivery.

Do I need this course when I have decided on a natural childbirth with no medical interventions?

It is good to plan for an unmedicated, no or minimal intervention childbirth. Our first class focuses on unmedicated strategies to help you cope with the challenges of labour at each phase. From experience, it is best to prepare for every scenario and enter your birth story with flexibility and openness. There is no right way to do childbirth. The goal is a healthy mom and baby. Childbirth can be empowering, especially when you feel good about how your birth story unfolded.

Will I benefit from this course if I am planning a home birth?

Yes! There will be parts of this course that are hospital specific; however, during registration, you will indicate if you are having a home or hospital birth. When you choose home birth, specific home birth content will be added. Sometimes, despite our intentions for home birth, things don’t go as planned and we end up having a hospital delivery. Having an idea of what that looks like will decrease stress and anxiety “in the moment” should that occur.

Will I have to learn specific techniques or buy a bunch of stuff?

No. There are no commercials, no sponsored content, no products being sold, no one will be singled out or put on the spot and there is no agenda other than for you to begin your birth story with confidence and tell it with joy and pride afterwards.
